We won't have a REC schedule until November. We do know that we are going to have two youth tournaments (a First Year Tournament on Saturday, February 28, 1998 -- ages 10 and under and an open tournament on Sunday, March 1, 1998 -- ages 13 and under) at the Bethel Park High School gym. The two kids that seem to stand out the most and competed well last year in season ending tournaments were Teddy Hoag and Drew Gates. Drew took third place at the Eastern Nationals in Millersville (PA) in the 70 lb. midget division. This is a great tournament that includes over 11,000 entries through two qualifiers to get to the National Finals. Drew did a great job. In fact, the boy who won the national championship lost to Drew in the regional finals 7-0. Drew had a let down in the quarter finals and lost a close match which put him into consolations. Teddy took second place at the Tournament of Champions (in Columbus, Ohio) in the 64 lb. Junior division. This is also a national tournament (over 2,600 entrants and is billed as the largest one day tournament in the world). Ted beat a former national folkstyle and freestyle champion along with a boy from Illinios who was a national runnerup at the USA Kids Nationals in March, 1997. Ted was also just seclected to the Ohio All-Star Wrestling Team. This is an elite wrestling team (billed as the best team of its kind in the US) that will go on a 40 day wrestling tour throughout the midwest and California during the summer of 1998. They will wrestle other all-star teams (Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, California, South Dakota, Utah, Florida, etc.). It is quite an honor (especially since they select very few wrestlers from out of state and even fewer 5th graders). There are a number tournaments coming up (Erie takedown tournament, State College tournament, Lockhaven tournament, Tournament of Champions Fall Classic (Ohio), PAWF fall championships at Clarion, etc.). I'll let you know if our kids do anything special at these events (probable only Teddy and Drew in the younger group --- but hopefully some of the older kids will compete too).
